The eLABJournal Mobile App (iOS and Android) is an extension to the eLABJournal Web App and is compatible with the eLABJournal Cloud as well as eLABJournal Private Cloud and eLABJournal On-Premise installations.

SnapGene was created by scientists and software designers to meet the everyday needs of molecular biologists. The software provides a simple yet powerful way for researchers to plan, visualize, document, and share their molecular biology procedures. In addition to SnapGene, GSL Biotech offers the free SnapGene Viewer, which includes the key visualization tools of SnapGene and allows researchers to make DNA maps and design primers, as well as SnapGene Server, which allows interactive DNA maps to be displayed in a web browser.

SnapGene’s attractive/streamlined/clean and easy-to-use plasmid displays allow scientists to plan and simulate their experiments. Combining the visual tools and features within SnapGene with the sample management and electronic notebook within eLABJournal will grant scientists a flexible and integrated approach to optimize their workflows.

Scientists spend most of their time in the lab working on experiments. Accordingly, it is not surprising that the Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) is the mostly used module of eLABJournal. Many of the feature requests we receive are related to further improving the functionality of the ELN module. Based on this feedback from our customers, we recently introduced some great additions to improve efficiency when using the ELN module of eLABJournal.

Improved ELN usability

By improving the usability of our ELN we can improve efficiency in the lab. To accomplish this, we introduced the following enhancements to make working within our ELN even more convenient:

  • Sections that are being edited are now highlighted and indicated in the experiment index tree.
  • Long experiment names are now displayed in a tooltip to immediately get information in the same window, which avoids having to go to a new tab or page to get that particular information.
  • Improved handling that guides you to any open section first before you start editing another section.

Customizing ELN export

Flexible data export options are one of the most important features for labs when selecting an ELN. Therefore, improving the export options is one of our main development priorities to continue to support our customers. eLABJournal ELN already included options to export the full ELN to PDF or HTML and export in custom format using the Application program Interface (API). In addition, eLABJournal now also offers the creation of custom PDF reports in which only selected information is included. While exporting an experiment to PDF, the option to choose which sections to be included will now be presented. The ability to create custom reports in PDF format will allow our users to efficiently and quickly send reports to upline managers or PIs when requested.

Continuous improvement of our developer tools

One of the features that differentiates eLABJournal from other ELN products, is the extensive developer tools that are available. By using the eLABJournal API and Software Development Kit (SDK), labs can develop their own plugins to extend the functionality of eLABJournal to meet their specific needs. We introduced new additions to our API and SDK, to serve our customers that require a full integration with their existing infrastructure.

ChemAxon and Bio-ITech jointly announce a new software integration. To enhance productivity in chemistry labs, ChemAxon’s chemical drawing browser component, Marvin JS, was integrated into the Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) eLABJournal.

Since Bio-ITech opened a dedicated US office in Cambridge, MA, in October 2017 as a division of Eppendorf, Inc., the US customer base has been rapidly growing. To further support current and future customers, Bio-ITech recently launched a dedicated US cloud to provide even better and faster services to customers in the Americas.

With the launch of the US cloud, data from our current customers located in the Americas has been migrated onto servers in certified data centers in the US. Not only will this allow Bio-ITech to support future growth, but also to be fully compliant with local data regulations, such as that of the European GDPR and the US Privacy model.

For end-users, there will be no significant changes in user experience. Based on location, users will be automatically directed to the correct server region for login. Services to customers in Europe and the rest of the world have not changed: data is still stored in our European data centres.

The 26th analytica exhibition has certainly delivered! More than 35,000 visitors and over 1,100 exhibitors from 49 countries around the globe gathered last week to share their vision about the future of laboratory industry. As a subsidiary of Eppendorf, Bio-ITech offered free demonstrations of its software products at the Eppendorf booth. We also premiered the new add-on eLABHybrid, a solution to offer storage of large data files on a local server while associating them in a (private) cloud-hosted eLABJournal ELN solution.

The event also offered a myriad of sessions for visitors with as the main theme “Digital Transformation”. Bio-ITech actively contributed to this discussion with the workshop “How digital documentation increases the quality and credibility of your research” and the demonstration how sample storage with the Eppendorf ULT Freezer is complemented by sample tracking with eLABInventory.

Overall, we are looking back on four exciting days where we met many enthusiastic visitors, interested scientists, and we had many inspiring discussions with our colleagues. We are already looking forward to analytica 2020!

We have just returned from LabAutomation which turned out to be a very successful event this year, both for visitors and exhibitors. The aim of this event was knowledge exchange around automation, robotization and software solutions within laboratories. Hosted in the beautiful 1931 Congrescentrum Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, we had the opportunity to be part of a very well organized and managed event for which we would like to give our gratitude to the organizer Nederlandse brancheorganisatie voor Laboratorium Technologie (FHI), We were particularly fond of the setting of the exhibitors area with catering centered in the middle, and exhibitors around it, which made it very natural and easy to connect and speak with people.

Introducing eLABHybrid

In response to customer requests for a solution for handling large (up to 100GB) data files, eLABHybrid is now available as an add-on in eLABJournal. This module allows you to store large data files on a local server while operating within the eLABJournal Cloud or Private Cloud. With eLABHybrid, files linked in the ELN are stored on a local server while the file’s audit trail continues to be kept within the ELN in accordance with GLP compliance. Read more

Many of you have requested extended integration of label printers. Not only did we upgrade the connection with the DYMO LabelWriter by including more options to customize and align labels, but we also enabled the connection of a Zebra or Brady ZPL label printer for printing barcode labels.

Office Online Server

We have upgraded the integration of native Microsoft Excel in the ELN to the new Office Online Server (OOS). With this new update, Microsoft Excel now offers the same functionalities as Microsoft Office365 Online Office. The new OOS also offers options to integrate other Office products in the near future.

  • ELN export – You can now export experiments as PDF or as HTML files including all associated data files for easy local data archiving, reporting, and other. Read how to use the ELN export
  • Enterprise System Settings – We have made several new features available for system administrators to manage a Private Cloud or eLABJournal On-Premise installation, including Single-Sign-On (SSO via ADFS).
  • To enhance productivity in chemistry labs, ChemAxon’s chemical editor, MarvinJS, has been integrated into the most recent eLABJournal update. Chemical structures can now be added in dedicated sections in the electronic lab notebook. The chemical editor offers an intuitive tool with which you can draw chemical structures, or visualize reactions and/or reaction mechanisms.
